Eye Health

Your Eyes

Understanding your eyes helps you take better care of them. Here is what you need to know about eye anatomy, examinations and common conditions.

Eye Anatomy
Cross-section of the human eye
← Hover over any part of the diagram
Corneathe clear, transparent front layer of the eye through which light passes.
Iris and Pupilthe iris gives the eye its colour and controls how much light enters, like a camera aperture. The pupil is the dark opening at its centre.
Lenshelps to focus light on the retina.
Retinathe innermost layer at the back of the eye. The macula is the central zone providing our most acute vision.
Optic Nerveconducts visual impulses from the retina to the brain.
Eye Examination

A general eye examination is more than just getting your eyes checked for a lens prescription — it involves several tests to check your vision and screen for eye disease.

We recommend a comprehensive eye examination every year. Regular annual check-ups allow early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease — many of which have no symptoms in their early stages.

Tests Performed During an Eye Examination
Visual acuity testchecks how well you see from a distance of about 20 feet using a Snellen chart.
Eye muscle testchecks the muscles that control eye movement.
Refraction testdetermines whether corrective lenses are needed and the precise prescription required.
Visual field testmeasures peripheral (side) vision using automated perimetry or confrontation testing.
Colour vision testdetects colour deficiencies using multicoloured dot patterns.
Slit lamp examinationmagnifies the cornea, lens, iris and anterior chamber to detect abnormalities.
Retinal examinationexamines the retina and optic nerve, usually after pupil dilation.
Glaucoma test (tonometry)measures internal eye pressure using noncontact, applanation, or pachymetry methods.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that choosing an eye specialist is an important decision. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.

Ask a Question
Most adults with stable prescription, adequate corneal thickness, and no underlying eye disease are good candidates. During your consultation, we perform a comprehensive suitability assessment including corneal topography and pachymetry to determine the safest and most effective procedure for your eyes.
Most patients notice improved vision within 24–48 hours. Full stabilisation typically occurs over 4–6 weeks. We use micro-incision techniques that require no stitches and allow for rapid, comfortable recovery. You will attend follow-up appointments at day 1, week 1, and week 4.
Yes. We are recognised providers for all major UAE insurance networks including Daman, Bupa, AXA, Cigna, and many others. Our patient services team will verify your coverage prior to your appointment and advise on any co-payments or pre-authorisation requirements.
Our oculoplastics team offers upper and lower blepharoplasty, ptosis correction, brow lifting, periocular Botox, hyaluronic acid fillers for tear trough and brow, and treatment of under-eye hollows. All cosmetic consultations are conducted in a private, unhurried setting.
Bring your Emirates ID, insurance card, any prior spectacle or contact lens prescriptions, and a list of current medications. If you wear contact lenses, please remove soft lenses 48 hours before and rigid lenses 2 weeks before any refractive consultation, as they temporarily alter corneal shape.
Yes. Our paediatric ophthalmology service covers vision screening from infancy, management of amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (squint) surgery, and myopia control programmes. We have child-friendly consultation rooms and experienced staff trained in caring for young patients.
